Repair or replace your AC
Repair it if the system is under about 10 years old or the fix is a small part. Get a replacement price if it is past 12 to 15 years, needs a compressor, coil or major leak repair, or has needed a repair every summer.
Start with age
This Old House puts the typical life of a home cooling system at 12 to 15 years, and the Department of Energy's Energy Saver guide suggests considering replacement once a heat pump or air conditioner is more than 10 years old. A Tucson system works more hours than most. The airport averaged 78.9 days at 100°F or more a year over 2016-2025, and July nights now average 77.6°F, so I'd lean toward the low end of that range here.
The data plate on the outdoor unit lists a serial number that usually encodes the year it was built. Send a photo of it with your request and the technician can tell you.
Then the size of the repair
| Repair | Typical cost (Fixr, 2026) | On an old system |
|---|---|---|
| Capacitor | $100 to $400 | Usually repair |
| Thermostat | $150 to $500 | Usually repair |
| Refrigerant leak repair | $200 to $1,500 | Depends on where the leak is |
| Evaporator coil | $400 to $2,700 | Get a replacement price |
| Compressor | $600 to $3,000 | Get a replacement price |
The $5,000 rule is a quick way to combine the two: multiply the age by the repair cost, and if the result is over $5,000, replacement is worth pricing.
Other things that tip it
- Repair history. A system that needed a repair last summer and the summer before is telling you something.
- Refrigerant. Existing R-410A systems can still be repaired with R-410A parts, according to the EPA. New systems built with components made from 2025 on use lower-GWP refrigerants. The refrigerant change.
- Comfort. Rooms that never cool, or a house that can't recover overnight, can be a sizing or duct problem that a repair won't fix.
- Power bills. A new system at or above the 14.3 SEER2 Southwest minimum uses less electricity than an older, less efficient one.
- Rebates. TEP lists up to $600 for a high-efficiency AC and $720 for a heat pump through participating contractors. The federal 25C credit ended after 2025.
What I would do
On a system under 10 years old, repair almost anything short of a compressor. On one over 15, I wouldn't put a compressor or coil into it; I'd replace it before the next summer and do it on my schedule, not in a July breakdown.
Questions Tucson homeowners ask
Should I replace a 15 year old AC?
If it needs a major repair, usually yes. This Old House gives 12 to 15 years as a typical life. If it runs fine and only needs a small part, repairing it and planning a replacement is reasonable.
Is it worth fixing a compressor on an old AC?
Rarely. Fixr lists compressor replacement at $600 to $3,000, and on a system near the end of its life that money usually goes further toward a new one.
