AC replacement and installation in Tucson

A new central air system typically costs $5,800 to $14,400 installed, with an $8,750 national average, according to Fixr. The price depends mostly on size and on whether the ducts need work. Ask for a free replacement estimate before deciding.

What a new system costs

Fixr's installed prices by size:

System sizeInstalled cost
2 ton$4,250 to $7,500
2.5 ton$4,500 to $8,000
3 ton$5,000 to $9,150
3.5 ton$5,450 to $9,700
4 ton$6,950 to $11,600
5 ton$7,800 to $14,000

Fixr, updated August 29, 2025. National figures, not a Tucson quote. Fixr's $8,750 average assumes a 3 ton split system with new ductwork in a 2,000 sq ft home.

Size it with a load calculation

The Department of Energy says the right size comes from calculating the house's heating and cooling loads, using ACCA Manual J, and warns that rules of thumb lead to oversized systems that cycle on and off too often and waste energy. If a contractor sizes your system by square footage alone, ask for the Manual J. Sizing for a 2,000 sq ft home.

Efficiency minimums in Arizona

Arizona is in the Department of Energy's Southwest region. Split-system central air conditioners under 45,000 Btu/h installed since January 1, 2023 must be at least 14.3 SEER2. Higher SEER2 costs more up front and uses less electricity, which matters in a city that runs its AC most of the year.

New refrigerant

New home air conditioners and heat pumps built with components made on or after January 1, 2025 must use a refrigerant with a global warming potential under 700, such as R-32 or R-454B rather than R-410A. Existing R-410A systems can still be repaired. What the change means for you.

Rebates and tax credits

TEP's Efficient Home Program lists rebates of up to $600 for a high-efficiency air conditioner and up to $720 for a high-efficiency heat pump, installed by a participating contractor with a quality installation. Ask the contractor whether they participate before work starts, and confirm the current amounts on tep.com.

The federal 25C energy efficient home improvement credit ended for equipment placed in service after December 31, 2025, according to the IRS. A system installed in 2026 doesn't qualify.

What a good quote includes

  • The load calculation and the size it produced.
  • Model numbers and the SEER2 rating for both the outdoor unit and the indoor coil or air handler.
  • What happens to the ducts. Will they be sealed, resized or left alone?
  • The permit and haul-away of the old unit.
  • The warranty on parts and labor, in writing.

I'd get two quotes on any replacement. The difference between them is usually the ductwork.

Questions Tucson homeowners ask

How much does a new AC unit cost for a 2,000 sq ft house?

Fixr's national average for a new central system is $8,750, based on a 3 ton, 16 SEER split system with new ductwork in a 2,000 sq ft home. A 3 ton system alone runs $5,000 to $9,150 installed. The right size for your house comes from a load calculation.

Which brand of AC is most reliable?

Installation quality matters more than the badge on the unit. Correct sizing and refrigerant charge come first. Pick the contractor first, then compare the warranty each brand comes with.

Will HVAC prices go down in 2026?

We haven't seen a reliable source that says so. The 2025 refrigerant change moved new systems to new equipment. If your system still works, there's no penalty in getting quotes now and deciding later.

Is there a federal tax credit for a new AC in 2026?

No. The IRS says the 25C credit isn't allowed for property placed in service after December 31, 2025. TEP still lists utility rebates for qualifying installs.
